Profile Information

How long have you been involved with Contact Improvisation?
Have taught classes and workshops on contact improvisation for over 10 years, and used contact improvisation for choreography and improvised performance for over 6 years.
Who was your first Contact teacher?
Did not really get introduced to contact improvisation by a single teacher - was inspired by the work of DV8 that I saw on video only originally, then learnt some partnering work through dance and drama classes, but learnt to jam through trial-and-error with my husband Lanon Carl Prigge (who had a gymnastic background) and then combining my interest in release techniques, contemporary dance and yoga with his skills in gymnastics and partnering work, developed our approach to teaching, training and performing contact improvisation.

Contact Improvisation in South Africa

Contact improvisation in South Africa is a fairly 'new' experience - the local community has probably been steadily developing over the last 10-15 years, but certainly does not have the consistent following and regular events that can be found internationally. Regular classes take place in isolated urban centres - Cape Town, Durban, Stellenbosch, Johannesburg - but there are not yet any national festivals, conferences or similar events to celebrate the form and bring all interested parties together.
This is hopefully about to change - with the Reunion Jam planned to take place in Stellenbosch, Western Cape in June to coincide with the CI36 "Pass the Dance" event...invitations to this wonderful opportunity will be sent out shortly, but if there are any South African jammers who want to be involved - even to set up their own contact improvisation event or workshop in other areas of the country - please lets make contact and start the dance! I would love to hear from you...
And hopefully in the not-too-distant future South Africa may even be able to host its first international event - inviting individuals from around the world to participate in a local jam celebration.
Love the Dance,
Dance the Love.
Sam

Hello Jenny, Pascale, Teri and Anneke...thanks for accepting the invitation to join the CI36 community. I would love to show the international community that there are some exciting and relevant things happening down South, so please do encourage anyone else you know who teaches contact, or jams for their own pleasure, or who is simply obsessed with the form - from around the country - to join our network. That way we can also get a great group together for the planned Reunion Jam in June.

Hey, Sam

I did in fact immediately respond to your invite. I've been wanting to jam for ages and now that I'm actually making money for a change, there's no way I'm missing it. I'd also like to bring a friend or two. Are there any details regarding the date, time and venue?

It's great to see you, too. It's been far too long and so much has transpired in my life. We're going to have a lot of catching-up to do. Hope you and Lanon are both very happy and fullfilled.

Much love & light:)
